A little Houston roof maintenance goes a long way. Most expensive roof failures we see could have been prevented with a 15-minute inspection twice a year. Here is the seasonal checklist we give every customer.
Spring (March–May): Post-Hail Season
Houston spring brings the worst of our hail weather. After every major storm, walk your property and look for dented gutters, damaged AC fins, and shingle granules in downspouts. Granules in the gutter are a sign your shingles are aging or were impacted by hail. Schedule a free professional inspection if you see anything.
Summer (June–August): Heat and Hurricane Prep
Summer attic temperatures in Houston can hit 140 degrees, baking shingles from below if your roof is not properly ventilated. Check that ridge vents and soffit vents are clear. Trim tree branches at least 10 feet back from the roof before hurricane season – flying limbs cause more damage than wind alone. Confirm your insurance policy is current before June 1.
Fall (September–November): The Big Inspection
Fall is the best time for a thorough professional roof inspection in Houston. Cooler temperatures make safe walkovers easier, and you want any small issues fixed before winter cold fronts. Check flashings around chimneys and vents, look at sealant condition, and clear leaves from valleys.
Winter (December–February): Cold Front Vigilance
Houston winter cold fronts bring driving rain and occasional freezes. Make sure attic insulation is dry and gutters drain freely. After any heavy rain, walk your interior ceilings looking for fresh stains – early leak detection prevents drywall and insulation replacement.
Annual To-Do List
Once a year, regardless of season: clean gutters and downspouts twice (spring and fall), inspect attic for daylight or stains, check all penetrations and flashings, photograph your roof for insurance baseline, and book a professional inspection.
Signs You Need a Houston Roofer Now
Curling or missing shingles, dark streaks (algae) more than three years old, sagging roof lines, daylight in the attic, granules collecting at downspouts, or any interior water stain – these all warrant a professional look.
